What is a discussion group?

An online discussion forum is the same as a physical group of people sitting together having a discussion. ie someone in the group poses a question, makes a statement or comment and others in the group respond.

The discussion forum for this course is web based (ie can be viewed in a web browser) and the group comprises all students doing the subject, the subject co-ordinator and tutors.

A few ways the online discussion forum differs from a physical group are:
  1. The group can be active 24 hours a day. The group only disbands at the end of session.
  2. Response to questions or comments can be delayed. Whilst you may get a response within 10 minutes, it make also take days. You may get no response if you ask a silly question.
  3. All conversations are recorded. A person can enter a discussion at any time, pick up the thread of conversation and contribute.
A few ways the online discussion forum is the same as a physical group are:
  1. Real people. Only you can't see them.
  2. Watch your P's & Q's. The same as if you were saying something in front of all students and staff in a tutorial.
  3. Multiple discussions at any one time. You can select any discussion topic of your interest and contribute to it.
  4. Start your own discussion. Pose a question or make a statement on a topic of your interest.
